SMART STROKES 2019 Conference

Call for Abstracts


Abstracts are now invited for the SMART STROKES 2019 Conference to be held at the Crowne Plaza, Hunter Valley (Lovedale NSW).

SMART STROKES is a scientific conference that has a strong focus on improving the clinical care and management of stroke. As well as showcasing the work of established clinicians and researchers SMART STROKES encourages and supports novice researchers and presenters.

The Aims of SMART STROKES are to

  • Showcase emerging and novel stroke research
  • Illustrate the application of evidence into clinical practice
  • Showcase innovations clinical practice
  • Deliver an academic conference for health professionals and researchers working in the field of stroke 

Abstracts will be published in the International Journal of Stroke:

SMART STROKES is delighted to partner again with the International Journal of Stroke to publish abstracts accepted by the Scientific Committee for the conference. It is important that your abstract is original work that will not be published in another peer-reviewed journal prior to the conference.


1.    Best Research Abstract Award (top scoring abstract as judged by Scientific Committee) - Sponsored by the Stroke Society of Australasia


2.    Best New Investigator Abstract Award (as judged on the day and must meet the criteria of being within 5 years of completing a higher degree)- Sponsored by the Stroke Society of Australasia 

3.    Best Stroke Care or Research for or with people with Aphasia Award (top scoring abstract in this topic as judged by the Scientific Committee)- Sponsored by the Australian Aphasia Association 

4.    Best Acute Nursing Abstract Award (top scoring best abstract in this topic as judged by Scientific Committee)- Sponsored by ASNEN

5.    Best Oral Poster Award(selected from the highest scoring abstract and as judged on the day of presentation)- Sponsored by SMART STROKES

6.     Encouragement Award for a New Presenter (has had less than five opportunities to present at a national or regional conference, will be judged on the day of presentation)- Sponsored by SMART STROKES

Winners of the awards will be announced at the SMART STROKES 2019 Conference. When submitting your abstract, please indicate clearly if your abstract is a contender for the “New Investigator”, “Acute Nursing” award or “Encouragement Award.”

Authors can elect to submit their abstract as one of four presentation types: 

  • Oral 15: This is a 12-minute oral presentation with an additional 3 minutes for questions, i.e. a total of 15 mins.
  • Oral 45 / Workshop: This is a 45-minute session. The presenter will seek to actively engage the audience, allocating at least 15 minutes for discussion and/or questions, and they will provide all the sessions resources and materials.
  • Oral 5 with Poster: The poster will be displayed for the duration of the conference; however, one author will also present a 5-minute overview with no additional time for questions. This overview must show one slide of the poster to familiarise the audience with the poster’s appearance when they look for it on display.
  • Poster Only: This is a poster which will be displayed for the duration of the conference.

As there are limited spaces for Oral presentations some abstracts that are nominated for an oral presentation may be offered an “Oral 5 with Poster” or “Poster Only” presentation at the discretion of the scientific committee


Abstracts must be submitted by midnight on Sunday, 10 Febuary 2019.

When you submit your abstract, please note:

Abstracts MUST :

  • Use the format of Background/ Aims/ Methods/ Results/ Conclusion or Discussion.
  • Be typed straight into the text field in Currinda. It is recommended that authors have this text ready.
  • Have a title that is less than 150 characters with spaces.
  • Not exceed 250 words, excluding the title, authors and institutions.
  • Show one presenting author by ticking the appropriate box.
  • Include the first name, surname, e-mail address and affiliation (institution) of all authors separately.
  • Only include abbreviations that are written in full the first time.
  • Not include any tables, figures or references (despite the reference fields being visible during submission).


The SMART STROKES Committee has made available a Scholarship Fund to support Nurses and Allied Health clinicians to attend the conference. The Scholarship Fund is open to applications from across Australasia and is a competitive process. To be considered for a scholarship please submit a separate scholarship application.  Applications will open in February 2019.   • Abstracts may only be submitted online through “Currinda,” an online database management website. Authors will be asked to create a profile on Currinda.
  • You must select the “SMART STROKES 2019” Conference.
  • You can submit multiple abstracts, one after the other.
  • Whilst you can come back to your submission at any time, once you have finished entering all details, please ensure you proceed all the way to the end to complete your submission.
  • An automatic acknowledgement email will be sent once your abstract submission is complete.
  • Presenters whose abstract have been accepted must register for the conference and pay a registration fee.
  • The Event Manager will notify all abstract submitters of acceptance via email by March 2019. 
  • All emails regarding abstracts will be sent automatically to the submitting author. If the submitting author is not the presenting author, it is his/her responsibility to pass on all relevant information to the presenter.
