Dr Anna Holwell

Alice Springs Hospital

Dr. Anna Holwell is a Specialist General Physician at Alice Springs Hospital. Anna has lived and worked in Alice Springs for over ten years providing inpatient care as well as outreach clinics in some of the most remote communities in Australia.

She has a particular interest in Indigenous Health, the cultural impact of chronic disease and providing culturally safe health care. Anna is passionate about improving healthcare access to rural and remote populations and ensuring that a patient's postcode does not affect their access to life saving treatments. She is the Head of the Department of Medicine at Alice Springs Hospital and Clinical Lead for Stroke in Central Australia.

Over the last 4 years Anna has played a pivotal role in developing and implementing thrombolysis, telestroke and stroke protocols for the Central Australian region; established the hospital's first dedicated Stroke Nurse Position and recently led Alice Springs Hospital to become one of the first Stroke Capable Regional General Hospitals certified nationally.

Anna is a member of the Australian Stroke Alliance, representing the Northern Territory within the alliance’s Champion Network; she is also a councillor with the Australian Stroke Academy. She was the recipient of the 2023 Stroke Foundation/Stroke Society of Australasia Stroke Care Champion Award. Anna is involved in a number of clinical research projects and is actively involved in medical education.
